Vigorous-intensity aerobic activity causes more rapid breathing and a greater increase in heart rate, but you should still be able to carry on a conversation—with shorter sentences.

Additional health benefits are gained from vigorous intensity aerobic activity and it results in higher levels of physical fitness, reduced risk for premature chronic health conditions and mortality related to physical inactivity.

  1. Running/jogging (5 miles per hour)
  2. Bicycling (more than 10 miles per hour)
  3. Swimming (freestyle laps)
  4. Aerobics
  5. Walking very fast (4 ½ miles per hour)
  6. Heavy yard work, such as chopping wood
  7. Weight lifting (vigorous effort)
  8. Basketball (competitive)
  9. Boxing
  10. Singles tennis
